Opportunities for ST2s

posted Sep 1, 2013, 9:30 AM by leedsvtsweb leedsvtsweb

We have 2 exciting opportunities for current ST2s to take a 12 month Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) in August 2014, returning to the UK in August 2015 to do their ST3 year. The Yorkshire and Humber Deanery supports OOPEs which enhance and promote excellence in the RCGP competencies for the individual and the Crisp report in
2007 recommended encouraging educators to facilitate training and work experience overseas.

The first opportunity is in Whanganui, New Zealand.
Whanganui is on the West coast of New Zealand's North Island.

There are 3 places to go to New Zealand.

Whanganui Hospital employs 27 junior doctors and 8 registrars. It covers a population of 62,210 with a large percentage of Maori (23%). It is a 120 bed hospital including psych, ENT and Eye. You would do 4 rotations of
3 months picking from below:
Medical / Geriatric Services
Surgical & Orthopaedic Services
Paediatric Services / Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services

Emergency Department Relief (covering for people who are on holiday / leave. Generally everyone has to do this)

There is the possibility to spend 3 months in the walk in centre in the hospital which is similar to GP work

The good things about this opportunity are that it includes return Air Fares to New Zealand with 3 months free accommodation and 1 month free car hire. There is good support from consultants with plenty of teaching
(daily) and One to one time with consultants. The on call committment is - "All House Officers will be  on the rota for four "Night / Weekend" duties per quarter; no more than two of these will be night duties." The rate of pay with a current rate of exchange of NZ$2 to £1 is approx £50000 to £60000.

From a leisure point of view water activities including rafting, sailing, canoeing, waterskiing, windsurfing and rowing. There is easy access to Mount Ruapehu, home to New Zealand's two largest ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa. Summers are warm and dry  - 18 to 30°  and winters are mild  - 4 to 14°. Two hours west of Whanganui  is the coastal city of New Plymouth, where you can tramp (hike to us!), climb, snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.

The second opportunitiy is with a non profit making human resources organisation called African Health Placements.
Yorkshire and Humber Deanery are making a link with this organisation and in particular with 2 regions of South Africa, Limpopo and the North West (both are in the North). We are looking for one or two trailblazers to go out in August 2014.

African Health Placements would organise the paperwork for you as well as briefings and orientation (in the UK and in country). There would be a local rate of pay but we have been advised that this would be more than enough for your expenses in South Africa and that some doctors save some money to bring back to the UK.

The best way to find out more about this organisation is on their website www.ahp.org.za and there is also a link to a youtube clip about them and the regions of Limpopo and the Noth West.

There are 3 places available in New Zealand and we are looking for 1 or 2 trailblazers to go out with Africa Health Placements. We would like to have confirmed who is going out by Christmas 2013.
